Ward 9: another parking lot

Following too close behind the city-approved demolition of historic buildings at the Ward 9 Lang Tannery development to make room for a surface parking lot, Kitchener councillors have approved a second lot in the area that meets neither the terms of the city’s official plan nor the Victoria Park Heritage Conservation District.

Plans for a 165-space paved lot behind a Victoria Street South church have been frozen because the owner of the nearby Beckett School of Music on Michael Street — worried about flooding risks — appealed the proposal to the Ontario Municipal Board. To date, trees have been axed, trenches dug and electric cables placed for parking lot lights that will shine into Theresa Street homes to make way for the lot which will help meet parking needs of city workers at a neighbouring works yard.
